KASONGO (IM)MATÉRIEL explore l’histoire oubliée des Arabo-Swahili en République démocratique du Congo. Leur trajectoire d’oppresseurs à opprimés ainsi que l’adoption locale de leur culture et de leur langue reflètent les tensions et l’ambivalence de l’histoire et du patrimoine. En croisant scènes de fouilles avec matériels d’archives et enregistrements contemporains, une archéologue et un photographe évoquent l’impact affectif de ce qui persiste du passé au présent.

KASONGO (IM)MATÉRIEL explores the forgotten story of the Arab-Swahili population in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Their trajectory from oppressors to oppressed, together with the local adoption of their culture and language, reflects the tensions and the ambivalence of history and cultural heritage. Mixing excavation scenes with funidng footage and contemporary shots, an archeologist and a photograph recall the emotional impact on the present by the rest of the past.

La loro traiettoria da oppressori a oppressi; insieme all’adozione locale della loro lingua e cultura, riflette le tensioni e l’ambivalenza di storia e patrimonio culturale. Intrecciando delle immagini di scavi con del materiale di repertorio e registrazioni contemporanee, un’archeologa e un fotografo evocano l’impatto emozionale sul presente di quello che persiste del passato.
