A surprising, intimate, and singular portrait of Jean-Michel Folon (1934-2005).
Both idolized and controversial, Folon is still recognized today as one of the most influential Belgian artists of the second half of the 20th century.
In this film, the first documentary ever made on Folon, the artist himself is able to tell his own story through previously unseen archival footage. A carefree poet and sometimes misunderstood artist, Fo- lon was nevertheless an incredibly ambitious visionary. In his interviews, he shows us his vision of art and the world, the tragedies in his life, and his unquenchable thirst for new encounters and experiences.
The film incorporates images loosely inspired by Folon’s work, examples of his artwork (paintings, posters, photo- graphs, drawings, and sculptures), unseen archival footage, as well as interviews with family, friends, artists, and art ex- perts. All of these elements create a documentary tale that plunges us into the labyrinthine thoughts of Jean-Michel Folon, and these thoughts even influence the structure of the film itself.
Folon is a complex personality who is more internally divi- ded than he would seem at first glance. He is both enigma- tic and accessible, familiar and frank, and he reminds us that the most important thing for him, above all, was telling a good story.
